The pain of erosion - the hope of healing

In October of 2018, I revealed a special project for a local non-profit, Saving Grace. They work to help domestic violence victims in many ways, and also do preventive work. You can learn more about them from their website, saving-grace.org. I wrote a specific artist statement for this series, and was glad to be a part of spreading a message of hope.

The promise of healing.

These painting series represents the erosion of a person’s beautiful soul when violence is used against them and present the hope and healing that can be found in a life without violence.

The abstract paint forms are the representation of our true selves; black is used for strength, pink for honesty and vulnerability, and gold for that magical spark inside us all. The graphite lines are in themselves a controlling action that penetrate and break up these paint forms. Corrosive chemicals are used during the painting process to corrupt the color of the paint and erode away the imagery. The viewer can experience the paintings from either direction—from a life without violence to a loss of true self or from that brokenness to a life that is healthily glowing with joy. This process happens subtly over time, either in abuse or in healing.
